Rahmatullah ibn Khalīl al-'Uthmānī al-Kairãnawĩ.

An Indian Shī`ī Muslim theologian and apologist famous for his April 10th-11th 1854 debate in Agra with the German missionary K. G. Pfander (d.1865) author of the anti-Islamic missionary tract Mizan al-haqq ("The Balance of Truth", German 1865 many trans. see below) and for his subsequent composition of the defensive [Kitāb] Iẓhār al-ḥaqq ("The Disclosure of the True Reality", 1st ed. Arabic 1867) (see below). By the mid. 1850s with the Bengali physician Muhammad Wazīr Khān he may also have written three polemical Christian works (so Schirrmacher, 1999:272).

al-Kairānāwī  [= al-Hindī], Raḥmat-Allāh ibn Khalīl al-Raḥmān  al-Uthmānī, (1817-1891). A learned Shī`ī Muslim scholar most famous for his debate with Pfander (see below) and his authorship of the Iẓhār al-ḥaqq written in response to the latter’s Mīzān al-ḥaqq. Samuel Lee (1783-1852)

Samuel Lee was a carpenter's apprentice from Shropshire who became something of a polyglot orientalist. He taught himself Hebrew Latin and  Greek by means of  secondhand books coming to enter Cambridge University  when 30 years old.  Within six years he became professor of Arabic later becoming the occupant of the prestigious regius chair in Hebrew.

James Lyman Merrick (b. Monson [Mass. USA] 1803 d. 1866)

A graduate of Amherst College (1830) and Columbia  Seminary (S. Carolina) (1833) Merrick was ordained in Charleston in 1834. An American Congregational missionary in 19th cent. Persia he was from 1849-64 the pastor of a Congregationalist Church in South Amherst Mass. USA. (BDCN:455). Working under the ABCFM  from 1834 he surveyed the scene respecting a missionary enterprise in Persia. In this connection he visited Turkey (Constantinople) in  Nov. 1834 where he studied Turkish (widely spoken in N.W. Persia) subsequently travelling to Tabriz (Autumn, 1835). In 1836 he visited Tehran with

  • Pfander, Carl, Gottlieb (b. Wurttemberg 1803[5]-1865),

    A German Protestant missionary polemicist, educated at the Basel Evangelical Missionary Seminary. Schooled in Arabic, Persian and Turkish he  served the with Basel Mission for 12 years (1825-1837) and then the British Church Missionary Society becoming operative in central Asia; especially Armenia and Muslim India, Persia and Turkey.

    At Agra and Peshawar in India Pfander engaged in public debates, his most famous being with the learned Shī`ī Muslim scholar Raḥmat-Allāh ibn Khalīl al-Raḥmān  al-Uthmānī, al-Kairanāwī  [= al-Hindī] (1817-1891). After the Indian Uprising of 1858 Pfander was transferred to Constantinople-Istanbul, later retiring to England where he died.
